Chanel Skincare

In 1995, Chanel Research scientists selected the Vanilla Planifolia orchid from among 117 vanilla varieties for its exceptional richness in polyketones — and discovered, unexpectedly, that it possessed remarkable skin regenerating properties. In 2002, Chanel opened its first open-sky laboratory in Madagascar to grow, harvest, and study it. The Sublimage line was born from a scientific surprise.

Four Open-Sky Laboratories · Four Continents · One Conviction

Chanel's approach to skincare is anchored in a research philosophy that has no direct equivalent in the luxury beauty industry: the open-sky laboratory — a botanical cultivation site where the house grows, harvests, and studies its key skincare ingredients in their natural environment, in direct partnership with local farmers, botanists, and phytochemists. Four such laboratories currently operate worldwide. The first, established in 2002 at Ambanja in Madagascar, cultivates Vanilla Planifolia — the orchid whose cell-regenerating properties anchor the Sublimage range. A second laboratory in Gaujacq, in the French Basque Country, tends to 2,000 varieties of camellia across five hectares of botanical garden, in partnership with Jean Thoby, a fifth-generation botanist and world-renowned camellia expert who has been working with the house since 2005. A third laboratory in the southern French Alps studies anthyllis and solidago — the alpine plants that appear in Sublimage's essence formulas. And a fourth, on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula, cultivates the Coffea arabica plant for its antioxidant molecules, which form the basis of the Blue Serum.

The Vanilla Planifolia orchid is hermaphroditic — it cannot be pollinated by insects or wind. Every flower at the Madagascar laboratory is pollinated by hand. The pods are harvested in April, the flowers from September to December. Through a specific polyfractioning process developed exclusively by Chanel — extraction, purification, and molecular distillation — the raw plant material is concentrated into an extract forty times richer in effective molecules than the original plant. This ultra-pure ingredient, polyfractioned Vanilla Planifolia, is the signature active of the Sublimage line.

Sublimage · The Exceptional Register

Sublimage is Chanel's apex skincare line — the collection that concentrates the full depth of the house's botanical research into a complete ritual of regeneration. Every formula in the line is built around polyfractioned Vanilla Planifolia, combined with supporting actives sourced from the house's own botanical network: Solidago extract from the French Alps, which protects collagen fibers; Himalayan Swertia from Bhutan, harvested by hand every three years during the plant's flowering cycle, which supports the skin's restorative cycle; a collagen-stimulating lipopeptide developed by Chanel Research. The result is a skincare philosophy built on the same conviction that governs N°5 and the Grasse fields: that the quality of the finished product depends absolutely on the quality of the raw material, and that the raw material can only be guaranteed by controlling its cultivation from the ground.

Sublimage · The Ritual
La Lotion · Le Sérum · La Crème · L'Extrait de Nuit · Le Masque · Le Geste Sublime

The Sublimage ritual is organized around four sequential steps and a signature application technique — Le Geste Sublime Radiance — developed by Chanel's skincare experts and designed to amplify the performance of each formula through precise massage movements: from the center of the face outward, from the jaw to the temples, from the forehead to the hairline. La Lotion prepares. Le Sérum regenerates and redefines — 40 times more concentrated in effective molecules than the raw plant material, its velvety texture melts on contact. La Crème smooths and comforts in three textures (Universelle, Fine, Suprême) calibrated to different skin densities. L'Extrait de Nuit — the night concentrate — combines four forms of Vanilla Planifolia with Swertia extract and a chronopeptide that resynchronizes the skin's nocturnal regenerative cycle. Le Masque completes the ritual twice weekly. The sequence is not a routine. It is a ceremony.

Sublimage · The Bottles
Drawn glass refills · French glassmaker collaboration · Translucent golden lacquer · Refillable

The Sublimage bottles are objects in their own right — designed in collaboration with a premier French glassmaker, each housing a refill made of drawn glass. The exterior case is retained and the inner vessel replaced, reducing material consumption without sacrificing the sensorial quality of the packaging. The translucent golden-lacquer finish of the Le Fluide bottle is a formal expression of the formula it contains: lightweight, luminous, precise. The serum's bottle carries clean lines and high-quality metal elements. Chanel describes these as "precious, timeless objects" — the language of fine jewelry applied to skincare, because the philosophy governing the formulas inside justifies the same standard of container.

N°1 de Chanel · The Red Camellia · Sustainability
Red camellia "The Czar" · Revitalizing properties · N°1 cream · Serum · Mist · Refillable · SPF

N°1 de Chanel is built around a specific cultivar of camellia that Jean Thoby developed at the Gaujacq laboratory — a deep red variety nicknamed "The Czar," known for its exceptional revitalizing properties. It is the most recent skincare line Chanel has launched, and its most explicit sustainability statement: every product is either refillable or made with sustainably sourced materials, the packaging designed for minimum environmental footprint. The N°1 de Chanel Cream plumps, smooths, and protects. The Revitalizing Serum addresses pores, wrinkles, elasticity, and radiance simultaneously. The Serum-in-Mist — one of the collection's most innovative formats — protects, soothes, and enhances radiance in a single spray. N°1 de Chanel is where the camellia, Gabrielle Chanel's most personal flower, finally becomes a skincare active — not a motif, not a symbol, but a molecule with a measurable effect on the skin.

Hydra Beauty · The Camellia As Hydration
Camellia Japonica Alba Plena · Micro Sérum · Micro Crème · Camellia Water Cream · Daily hydration

Hydra Beauty is anchored in the Camellia Japonica "Alba Plena" — one of the 2,000 varieties cultivated at Jean Thoby's botanical garden in Gaujacq — selected for its hydrating molecular properties. The Hydra Beauty Micro Sérum is composed of thousands of micro-bubbles that lock in moisture for up to twenty-four hours. The Micro Crème fortifies and replenishes. The Camellia Water Cream — a luminous, water-light fluid — illuminates while hydrating. The collection is the daily register to Sublimage's exceptional one: the camellia every morning, in a texture that disappears into skin with the discretion of a product designed to be used and forgotten, its effect accumulated over time rather than announced upon application.

Le Lift · The Firmness Architecture
Alfalfa extract · Smooths · Firms · Le Lift Sérum · Crème · Flash Eye · Le Geste Lift

Le Lift is the house's firmness-focused skincare line — a collection organized around the visible lifting and tightening of facial contours, formulated with an alfalfa extract that supports the skin's structural proteins. Le Lift Sérum smooths, firms, fortifies, and creates an instant tightening effect upon application. Le Lift Crème in its standard and Riche versions provides day-long firmness support. Le Lift Flash Eye delivers an immediate tightening effect around the eye contour. Each product in the Le Lift range is accompanied by Le Geste Lift — a signature technique of sculpting massage movements designed to enhance the lifting effect of the formulas by stimulating the skin's natural contraction responses. Le Lift is the collection for those who approach skincare as a form of precision.

Éclat Premier · Brightening · The New Chapter
2025 · Brightening · Unifying · Niacinamide · Camellia extract · La Mousse · Bright Milky Essence

Éclat Premier — launched in 2025 — is Chanel's most recent skincare collection, organized around radiance and the unification of skin tone. The Éclat Premier La Mousse is a brightening cleansing cream-to-foam enriched with premier flower extract and pure niacinamide, designed to reduce the appearance of dark spots from the first step of the ritual. The Bright Milky Essence is a lightweight milk-to-water essence that transforms on contact with skin — its texture the sensorial argument for a formula that works before the formula itself is felt. Éclat Premier is where Chanel's scientific rigor meets its most immediately visible ambition: skin that catches light the way a polished surface catches light, not from product but from the skin itself having been given what it needs.

The Vanilla Planifolia is hermaphroditic.
Every flower at the Madagascar laboratory
is pollinated by hand.
Forty times more concentrated than the raw plant,
the polyfractioned extract is the molecule
that Chanel Research found by accident in 1995
and has been perfecting ever since.
This is what a skincare philosophy looks like
when it begins in a field.

Jean Thoby · The Camellia Expert · A Century Of Gabrielle's Flower

Jean Thoby is a fifth-generation botanist who has tended the camellia conservatory at Gaujacq — in the French Basque Country — since 1986. He has cultivated 2,000 varieties of camellia across five hectares of botanical garden, including seedlings from the mother plants that Gabrielle Chanel herself ordered more than a century ago. Among the varieties he has developed for the house is the deep red cultivar nicknamed "The Czar" — the camellia whose revitalizing molecular properties anchor the N°1 de Chanel skincare line. His phytochemical laboratory, operated alongside Italian phytochemist Nicola Fuzzati, has co-authored more than thirty scientific publications. The camellia that Gabrielle Chanel pinned to her jacket in 1913 is, through Jean Thoby's work, now a molecule in a serum. The flower did not merely inspire the house. It eventually became its most potent skincare active.

15 East 57th Street · The Chanel Boutique · Skincare Consultations

The full Chanel skincare range is presented at 15 East 57th Street — Sublimage, N°1 de Chanel, Hydra Beauty, Le Lift, Éclat Premier, and the signature cleansers and essences that form the foundation of each ritual. Fifteen-minute complimentary skincare consultations are offered at the boutique, dedicated to identifying the ritual most suited to a particular skin's needs and teaching the Le Geste application techniques that Chanel's experts have developed to maximize each formula's performance. The house's position is explicit: the product alone is not the ritual. The gesture that applies it is as important as the molecules it contains. New York clients have access, at 57th Street, to the same standard of skincare science and botanical sourcing that Chanel has been developing — from the Grasse jasmine fields to the Madagascar vanilla plantation to Jean Thoby's camellia conservatory — for a century and a quarter.

Chanel Research found the Vanilla Planifolia
in 1995, among 117 vanilla varieties,
and understood what no one had understood before:
that the orchid that makes vanilla
also makes skin regenerate.
In 2002, Chanel planted 3,500 vines in Madagascar
and began to pollinate each flower by hand.
Twenty-three years later,
the extract is forty times more concentrated
than the plant it came from.
Some discoveries take a laboratory.
Some take a field.
